FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is Rapid Set Acrylic Primer and what can it be used for?

Rapid Set Acrylic Primer is a concentrated primer that improves the adhesion of self-leveling products to the concrete substrate and acts to seal porous concrete to prevent pinholes and bubbles from forming in the finished surface.

  • How do I prepare the substrate prior to applying the Acrylic Primer?

Mechanically prepare the substrate by shot-blasting and/or diamond grinding to achieve ICRI Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) 3. The substrate must be clean, sound, have an absorptive surface and be free of oil, concrete sealers, or any other material that may inhibit bond. Remove all shot, dirt and other debris. Acid etching the surface is not recommended.

  • Do I need to dilute Acrylic Primer?

Yes. In most cases dilute with 1 part water to 1 part primer. For excessively porous or absorbent concrete surfaces, multiple coats may be necessary. Dilute the first coat with 3 parts water to 1 part primer. Additional coats should be diluted 1 part water to 1 part primer.

  • How many coats are required?

The number of coats depends on the porosity and absorption of the substrate. If the primer dries in less than 20 minutes, the substrate is excessively porous and will require an additional coat. Additional coats may be added as soon as the previous coat is dry. Add additional coats until the primer stays wet for at least 20 minutes.

  • How do I apply the Acrylic Primer?

Apply primer to the substrate and work into the surface with a soft-bristle push broom. Spread evenly to thoroughly coat the surface and avoid puddling. Application with a paint roller or spray is not recommended as this may not sufficiently coat the surface.

  • How soon can I apply the Rapid Set products over Acrylic Primer?

Cementitious products can be applied when the primer is thoroughly dry and tack-free. If more than 24 hours have elapsed, reapply primer. Can or should I use Acrylic Primer with other Rapid Set products like Cement All or Mortar Mix?

  • Concrete Mix?

Acrylic Primer is compatible with many Rapid Set cement-based mortars and concrete. However, it is rarely required with products outside of the Self-Leveling product lines when the substrate is properly prepared.

  • What is the coverage of Acrylic Primer?

A one gallon of concentrated Acrylic Primer will typically cover about 400 ft to 600 ft after proper dilution.

  • What is the shelf life of Acrylic Primer?

Acrylic Primer has a shelf life of 2 years from date of manufacture if never frozen and when stored properly in a dry location, protected from moisture, out of direct sunlight and in an undamaged package.

  • What are the difference between Acrylic Primer and TXP Fast?

Acrylic Primer is an acrylic based product. The TXP line of primers are epoxy-based. Some TXP products are suitable for concrete with higher moisture vapor levels or relative humidity.
